    Este artículo muestra un panorama de los problemas y posibilidades que se abren al estudio de la mitad norte del territorio hoy portugués a lo largo de los siglos VIII al XI. Empieza por criticar las visiones teleológicas de un «pre-Portugal», que oscurecen la fragmentación y complejidad territorial características de este período, y por llamar la atención sobre la existencia de cuatro grandes áreas en lo que sería más tarde el territorio del reino de Portugal. Después de un breve recorrido por el corpus de fuentes disponibles, con especial atención a la documentación pero sin olvidar los textos narrativos y las fuentes materiales, se analiza el tratamiento del período altomedieval en la historiografía portuguesa, subrayando la progresiva superación de las visiones nacionalistas a partir de los años ochenta y buscando esbozar las principales líneas de trabajo a lo largo de las últimas décadas. Finalmente, se propone una agenda para el estudio de la Alta Edad Media en Portugal en los próximos años, destacando la necesidad de reforzar el análisis comparativo a la escala ibérica, tanto en el ámbito cristiano como musulmán.

    This article offers an overview of the problems and possibilities that confront the study of the northern half of present-day Portugal in the eighth to eleventh centuries. It sets off by countering the teleological notion of a “pre-Portugal” which obscures the territorial fragmentation and complexity that characterise this period, and by drawing attention to four different areas that make up what would later become the kingdom of Portugal. Upon a quick survey of the extant sources which focuses on charters but includes a brief reference to narrative texts and material evidence, the article reviews the scholarship on early medieval Portugal and highlights the gradual overcoming of nationalist approaches from the 1980s, while seeking to outline the main lines of work over the last decades. Finally, its sets out an agenda for future study of the early Middle Ages in Portugal, stressing the need to frame it within a broad comparative enquiry that encompasses both the Christian and Muslim halves of Iberia.
