    Tras la explosión cofradiera en la Ciudad de los Reyes entraron en funcionamiento corporaciones de españoles, criollos, negros e indios. Las que agruparon a estos últimos se organizaron a ejemplo de los primeros y ofrecieron a su grupo social una manera de asociarse, de entender el culto católico y de asegurarse materialmente ante la enfermedad y la muerte. Así, la cofradía de indios de Consolación del convento de la Merced de Lima reunió a un buen número de naturales, sin distinguirlos en razón a su género. Sin embargo, sí que hubo diferenciación, relegando nominativamente a las cofradas al espacio de culto. En la práctica, con su propia estructura, estas mujeres acabaron por ocupar un espacio dentro de la cofradía dedicándose a la atención de los cofrades.

    After the brotherhood explosion in Lima, corporations of spanish, creoles, blacks and indians came into operation. Those that brought together the latter organized themselves following the example of the former and offered their social group a way of associating, understanding Catholic worship and materially insuring themselves against illness and death. Thus, the indian’s brotherhood of Consolation of the convent of La Merced de Lima brought together a good number of natives, without distinguishing them based on their gender. However, there was differentiation by norms relegating the womens to the space of worship. In practice, with their own structure, these women ended up occupying a space within the brotherhood dedicating themselves to the care of the members.
