Un lingüista en el Santo Oficio. Sebastián de Covarrubias y Horozco (1539-1613)

    A diferencia de otros componentes mejor conocidos de la jurisdicción inquisitorial, más relevantes por la función o el número, como los jueces o los familiares, carecemos de estudios de conjunto, sistemáticos y bien estructurados, referidos a la mayoría de las demás personas ligadas al desempeño de su cometido por el tribunal de la fe en el mundo hispano. De entre estas, apenas han merecido los consultores sino breves referencias de los estudiosos y siguen constituyendo un colectivo diverso, compuesto por intelectuales destacados, que merecerían seguramente un acercamiento bien articulado. Convendría normalizar los rasgos definitorios de este grupo informal. Ponderar su adscripción social de origen, la pertenencia al clero secular o regular, la condición laical de algunos, las conexiones previas o posteriores con la universidad o los distintos sectores de la burocracia y los tribunales civiles y eclesiásticos, así como la importancia que en la carrera profesional haya podido tener tal desempeño, considerado un escalón promocional encaminado al propio Santo Oficio u otras instituciones de mayor o menor prestigio en cuanto al ejercicio sectorial del poder. Planteado aquí en esquema el referente normativo que a lo largo del tiempo sustentó al cargo, así como las discusiones de los juristas acerca del papel desempeñado por los consultores en el trámite de los procesos inquisitoriales, se intenta por fin ejemplificar la trayectoria y actuación de un consultor del relieve social e intelectual del lingüista Sebastián de Covarrubias, bien identificado por ser el autor del Tesoro de la lengua española.

    Unlike the better-known persons who constitute the inquisitorial jurisdiction, more important in function or number, such as judges or familiars, we lack comprehensive, systematic and well-structured studies of the majority of other persons involved in the functioning of the Holy Office in the Hispanic world. Among these people, the consultants have hardly merited more than very brief references from the researchers and they constitute a varied group, composed of renowned intellectuals who would certainly deserve a thorough study. It would be useful to standardise the defining features of this informal group. Their original social background, their membership of the secular or regular clergy, their lay status, their previous or later links with the university or the various sectors of the bureaucracy, the civil and ecclesiastical administration, should be weighed up. It would also be necessary to study the importance that their involvement may have had in their professional career, considered as a step towards the Holy Office itself or towards other more or less prestigious institutions in terms of the exercise of power. Having outlined here the normative reference that sustained the position over time, as well as the jurists’ discussions about the role played by the consultants in the processing of the inquisitorial trials, the aim is finally to exemplify the career and actions of a consultant of the social and intellectual importance of the linguist Sebastián de Covarrubias, well identified as the author of El Tesoro de la lengua española (Treasury of the Spanish language).
