En 1992, la firma del Tratado de Maastricht y la creación del IBEX-35, el índice bursátil que agrupa a los 35 valores de mayor capitalización de España, sellaron la entrada del País ibérico en la economía globalizada. El vuelco económico vino acompañado deuna copiosa cosecha de grandes eventos deportivos y culturales, destinados a subrayar la ansiada conquista de la modernización del Estado: los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona, la Expo de Sevilla y los actos del Quinto Centenario del descubrimiento de América contribuyeron a realizar un auténtico annus mirabilisen la historia de la España contemporánea.Al mismo tiempo, Madrid se convirtió en el escenario de una de las grandes políticas culturales comunitarias, pudiendo reclamar el título de capital europea de la cultura. El objetivo de la ponencia es analizar este importante evento, cuyo papel en la nueva configuración del imaginario colectivo nacional ha sido hasta ahora descuidado por la historiografía.

In 1992, the signing of the Maastricht Treaty and the creation of the IBEX-35, the stock market index that brings together the 35 values with the highest capitalization in Spain, sold the entry of the country into the globalized economy.The economic turn was accompanied by a lot of great sporting and cultural events, destined to underline the eager conquest of the modernization of the Iberian State: the Barcelona Olympic Games, the SevilleExpo and the Acts of the Fifth Centenary of the discovery of America have contributed to realizing an authentic annus mirabilisin the history of contemporary Spain.Meanwhile, Madrid has become a stage for one of the main cultural politics of the European community, claiming the title of European capital of culture. This article aims to analyze that important event, whose role in the new configuration of the national collective imaginaireis still ignored by the historians.
