Desde estas páginas, sirviéndonos del enfoque biográfico, que se consolida en los últimos tiempos como una de las formas de escribir Historia que viene aportando excelentes resultados, nos acercaremos a la figura de la marquesa de Santiago, María Soledad Isidra Rodríguez de los Ríos (1764-1807). Poco más que un par de tópicos son los que nos han llegado sobre ella desde la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII hasta el presente; es por ello que consideramos la necesidad de realizar un estudio en profundidad de su figura, que nos permita conocerla y, según prevemos, colocarla en un lugar destacado dentro de la sociedad de su época, gracias a cómo se desempeñó en diferentes facetas de su vida –fundamentalmente la cultural y la familiar–. El análisis de su persona y su contexto, en el Madrid finisecular, nos permitirán lanzar algunas hipótesis acerca del porqué de su negativa consideración en los medios de la época. Esposa dos veces y madre de seis hijos, la sociedad demandaba de ella una serie de conductas que, según la documentación nos indica, transgredió. Logró mantener la tutela de sus hijos menores y, por lo tanto, el control de sus patrimonios, pese a haber contraído segundas nupcias –hecho que se apartaba de la norma y para lo que debió obtener el visto bueno de la máxima autoridad, el rey–. Por otro lado, el mal entendimiento con su segundo marido, le llevó incluso a presentar cargos contra él que avalaran un posible divorcio del matrimonio. Con todo ello, buscamos ofrecer una imagen de la marquesa, en la medida de lo posible, lo más próxima a la realidad y alejada de los tópicos.

From these pages, using the biographical approach, consolidated in recent times as one of the ways of writing History that has provided excellent results, we will approach the figure of the Marquise of Santiago, María Soledad Isidra Rodríguez de los Ríos (1764-1807). Little more than a couple of topics have reached us about her from the second half of the 18th century to the present. That is why we consider the need to carry out an in-depth study of her figure, which allows us to know her and, as we foresee, place her in a prominent place within the society of her time, thanks to how she performed in different facets of her life. –fundamentally cultural and family–. The analysis of her person and her context, in turn-of-the-century Madrid, will allow us to launch some hypotheses about the reason for her negative consideration in the media of the time. Wife twice and mother of six children, society demanded of her a series of behaviors that, according to the documentation indicates, she transgressed. She managed to maintain guardianship of her minor children and, therefore, control of their assets, despite having remarried –a fact that deviated from the norm and for which she had to obtain the approval of the highest authority, the king–. On the other hand, the misunderstanding with her second husband even led her to file charges against him that would support a possible divorce from the marriage. With all this, we seek to offer an image of the marquise, as far as possible, as close to reality and far from clichés.
