    El día 26 de mayo de 1808 Santander se levantó contra Napoleón y, ante la difícil coordinación con Asturias, buscó el apoyo de Gran Bretaña por su cuenta. Este artículo analiza los contactos que las autoridades cántabras establecieron con el Gobierno británico hasta finales de ese año. Para ello se ha examinado especialmente la correspondencia de los principales interlocutores: el Obispo de Santander, John Hunter, Philip K. Roche y James Leith. Las negociaciones no obtuvieron los resultados esperados y la ayuda recibida fue mínima. Sin embargo, su estudio aporta nuevos datos sobre las relaciones anglo-españolas durante la Guerra de la Independencia.

    On 26 May 1808 Santander rose against Napoleon and, given the difficult coordination with Asturias, pursued the support of Great Britain on its own. This article analyses the contacts the Cantabrian authorities established with the British Government until the end of that year. To that purpose, the participants’ correspondence was primarily examined: The Bishop of Santander, John Hunter, Philip K. Roche and James Leith. The outcome of those negotiations was not the expected one and the aid Santander received was negligible. However, their study provides new data about the Anglo-Spanish relations during the Peninsular War.
