Resumen de Circunstancias y consecuencias de la intervención militar de Quito Cecilio Metelo sobre las Baleares (123 a.C. 121 a.C.)

En este artículo se tienen en cuenta, a la hora de valorar el proceso de roma-nización de las Baleares, las culturas prerromanas, la talayótica en Mallorca y Menorca, y la púnica en las Pitiusas. Se analizan las circunstancias de la República Romana en el momento de tomar la decisión de intervenir militar-mente sobre las Baleares. En este trabajo se entrelazan los datos procedentes de las fuentes literarias con los arqueológicos, llevando a cabo una interpreta-ción de ese pasado, que lleva a plantear que el mayor interés de Roma sobre estas islas fue el poderlas tener bajo su órbita para asegurar la ruta marítima entre las penínsulas itálica e ibérica.

This article presents the pre-Roman cultures prevailing in Mallorca and Menorca, Talayótic on the one hand and that of the Pitiusas islands on the other, Punic. It then sets out the circunstances of the Roman Republic lead-ing to the decision to conquer the islands. It next analyses the response of the different cultures to the effects of Romanization. The work connects literary sources and archaeological evidence to interpret these events, showing that the primary reason for the conquest was the need for the maritime routes, and to obtain slings for war. It concludes by explaining the long term effect of the conquest on the two cultures.
