The city of Évora has, within its walled perimeter, a remarkable collection ofhistoric buildings, many of which are of religious nature, and which characterize the city’simage. The formal richness and diversity of these buildings and the environment that they helpedto create, were certainly factors which contributed to the decision to include this city as a worldheritage site in 1986.The great monuments reflect the marks of genius and ingenuity of their builders, as well asinfluences shaping their view of life, art, philosophy and the feelings of the society of their day.We can consider that the complex consisting of the monastic church and the convent of SaintFrancis in Évora turns those concepts into reality.This church deserves a closer look, w h e t h e r i t b e for its architectural quality or in orderto be able to justify interest in its conservation.

A cidade de Évora dispõe, dentro do seu perímetro amuralhado, de um conjuntoassinalável de edifícios históricos, muitos dos quais de carácter religioso, e que marcam aimagem da cidade. A riqueza formal e a diversidade destes edifícios, bem como o ambienteenvolvente que propiciaram, contribuíram certamente para que esta cidade fosse incluídano património mundial em 1986.Os grandes monumentos refletem as marcas do génio e do engenho dos seus construtores, bemcomo plasmam os seus conceitos sobre vida, arte, filosofia e sentimentos da sociedade coeva.Podemos considerar que o conjunto monástico constituído pela Igreja e o Convento de S.Francisco, em Évora materializam esses conceitos.Esta Igreja merece uma observação mais atenta, quer pela sua qualidade arquitetónica querpara se poder fundamentar o interesse na sua salvaguarda.
