A finales del cuarto y principios del tercer milenio antes de Cristo, se fabricaron cientos de placas grabadas de pizarra (y otras piedras) que fueron elaboradas y colocadas con los muertos en las tumbas del suroeste de iberia. Los diseños geométricos de las placas y sus ojos han cautivado la imaginación arqueológica durante casi 150 años. Este artículo ofrece una visión general de las placas grabadas del suroeste de Iberia. Se consideran los contextos culturales en los que se han recuperado su variabilidad y la historia de su estudio, la hipótesis heráldica de las placas clásicas y las prácticas sociales que materializan.
Mientras que muchas de las investigaciones sobre las placas ibéricas se han centrado en sus presuntos significados, este artículo también explora su papel, como arte, en la configuración de la vida social al permitir a las personas y grupos entender sus identidades y negociarlas con los demás.

During the late 4th/early 3th. millennium BCE, hundreds of exquisitely engraved plaques made (and other stones) were crafted and placed with the dead in tombs throughout Southwest Iberia. The plaques' geometric designs and ocular imagery have captivated the archaeological imagination for nearly 150 years. This paper provides a general overview of the engraved plaques of Southwest Iberia. It considers the cultural contexts in which they have been recovered, their variability, the history of their study, the heraldic hypothesis for the Classic plaques, and the social practices they materialize. While much research about the Iberian plaques has engaged with their pre-sumed meanings, this paper also explores what the plaques did and their role, as art, to shape social life by enabling people and groups to understand their identities and negotiate these identities with others.
