    This paper aims to shed light on the significant development experienced, along the nineteenth century, by the contributions on the graphic image of the Canary Islands published in the sources of the period, specially in the field of travel literature, and also to consider the role these creations may have had in the shaping of the idea of the Canaries abroad. The attention is focused on the study of these graphic materials through the approach to their features, to their artistic value and to the work of the professionals who made them possible. All these levels are examined in the analysis of the achievements of two outstanding painters: Edward Hubert Fitchew (1851-1934) and Paul Merwart (1855-1902), whose talent can be admired in the illustrations for The Canary Islands as a winter resort by John Whitford (1890), and for Cinq années de séjour aux îles Canaries by René Verneau (1891).

    El propósito de esta contribución es alumbrar el apreciable desarrollo que, a lo largo del siglo XIX, conocen las aportaciones sobre la imagen gráfica de Canarias en las publicaciones del momento, señaladamente en las de literatura de viaje, además de considerar el protagonismo que estas creaciones pueden haber tenido en la formación de la idea de las Islas en el exterior. En particular, se busca divulgar y examinar estos materiales gráficos a través del acercamiento a sus rasgos conceptuales, a su valor artístico y a la labor de aquellos profesionales que intervinieron en el proceso de creación. Estos aspectos se consideran en el análisis específico del trabajo de dos ilustradores muy destacados: el del inglés Edward Hubert Fitchew (1851-1934) en The Canary Islands as a winter resort, de John Whitford (1890), y el del francés Paul Merwart (1855-1902) en Cinq années de séjour aux îles Canaries, de René Verneau (1891).
