En 1713, tras el tratado de Utrecht, Víctor Amadeo II de Saboya se convirtió en rey de Sicilia. Este resultado contó con el firme apoyo de Gran Bretaña. Sin embargo, el equilibrio internacional seguía siendo precario y con la cambiante situación política, el intento de reconquistar Sicilia por parte de España y la estipulación de la Cuádruple Alianza, Víctor Amadeo II tuvo que ocuparse de la difícil defensa de Sicilia. Este trabajo, a partir de documentos conservados en archivos italianos, ingleses y españoles, reconstruye los acontecimientos diplomáticos relativos al paso de Sicilia de los Saboya a los Habsburgo de Austria en los años 1717-1720.

In 1713, following the treaty of Utrecht, Victor Amadeus II of Savoy became king of Sicily. This outcome was strongly supported by Britain. Nevertheless, the international balance remained precarious and with the changing political situation, the attempt to reconquer Sicily from Spain and the stipulation of the Quadruple Alliance, Victor Amadeus II had to deal with the difficult defense of Sicily. This paper, using documents preserved in Italian, English and Spanish archives, reconstructs the diplomatic events relating to the passage of Sicily from the Savoys to the Habsburgs of Austria in the years 1717-1720.
