The finding of in the Archivo del Reino de Valencia of different legal proceedings against the friars of the Order of Montesa suspected of supporting the Archduke’s cause in the context of the Spanish Succession War, in addition to a list of those who collected their salaries through the intercession of the viceroy and lieutenant general of the Order, allows us to reconstruct their trajectories and investigate the punitive measures that were applied to them. This reveals a clear trend towards imprisonment and subsequent reconciliation with the Order. But, on top of that, this documentary source – heretofore unexplored by researchers– helps to expand the list of austracists friars compared to those previously known.
