    El trabajo tratará de abordar el difícil debate acontecido en el otoño del Imperio español – especialmente en los reinados de Felipe III y Felipe IV – entre el idealismo confesional y el pragmatismo político. El artículo quiere estudiar el momento en que se empezarán a poner en duda los planteamientos políticos tradicionales que habían sostenido el edificio ideológico de la Monarquía Católica. La transformación sobrevenida gracias a la aparición e influencia del tacitismo político español, corriente del pensamiento que buscó ser una forma encubierta del maquiavelismo y pretendió ser modelo alternativo al eticismo hispano, penetró en las distintas discusiones del Consejo de Estado y de las juntas de teólogos organizadas en vistas a dilucidar las distintas decisiones en circunstancias históricas excepcionales, donde la reputación y la naturaleza “católica” de la Monarquía podrían estar en peligro. Los debates se darán en el contexto de las negociaciones que la Monarquía Española llevó a cabo con sus enemigos, observándose así la confrontación entre los posicionamientos más tradicionales, frente a la nueva vía pragmatista ya asentada en la corte.

    The work will try to address the difficult discussion that happened in the fall of the Spanish empire. Especially in the reigns of Philip III and Philip IV between confessional idealism and political pragmatism. The article wants to study the moment when the traditional approaches that had sustained the ideological building of the Catholic Monarchy, will begin to be questioned. The transformation occurred thanks to the emergence and influence of Spanish political tacitism, a current of thought that sought to be a covert form of Machiavellianism and intended to be an alternative model to Hispanic Ethicism, entered the different elections of the State Council and of the theologian’s meetings organized in order to elucidate the different elections of the Council of State and of the theologians’ meetings organized in order to clarify the different decisions in exceptional historical circumstances, where the reputation and the “Catholic” nature of the Monarchy could be in danger. The debates will take place in the context of the negotiations that the Spanish Monarchy carried out with its enemies, thus observing the confrontation between the more traditional positions, facing the new pragmatist route and settled in the court.
