    En un periodo de seis años, entre 1866 y 1872, aparecieron en España dos manuscritos mayas, el Troano y el Cortesiano, descubriéndose años después que ambos eran parte de un mismo códice, el Trocortesiano o de Madrid. Se reconstruye la historia del códice desde Yucatán, para llegar a Madrid y Paris. Se parte de los escasos datos de la documentación museística y de las publicaciones de la época, de la indagación sobre los personajes relacionados y sobre la cambiante situación política.

    In a period of six years, between 1866 and 1872, two Mayan manuscripts appeared in Spain, the Troano and the Cortesiano; some years after was revealed that they were both part of the same codex: the Trocortesiano or Madrid. The two parts of the Maya codex would have been delivered by their owner, apparently an Yucatec outstanding landowner, to two known persons unrelated to each other, in 1864 the fragment Troano and in 1865 the Cortesiano, who left Mexico towards the beginning of 1866 the Troano and at the end of 1867 the Cortesiano. The Cortesiano was acquired in 1872 and the Troano in 1888 when it was already known that both formed a single codex.
