Fishing is usually defined as a male world. The study of women in fishing communities proves otherwise. They perform a vital economic function and they are the head of the family because of the absence of men. Their attitudes and behaviour contrast with the cult of domesticity: they work and manage their money, they are shameless and they occupy the public spaces. The everyday life of these women in the Cantabric coast will be analysed as well as how this is taken by the society of the time.
