Resumen de Demografía urbana del Antiguo Régimen en Galicia: la ciudad de Santiago de Compostela

Síntesis de la tesis doctoral acerca de la población de la ciudad de Santiago de Compostela entre la primera mitad del siglo XVII y los inicios de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Las fuentes y la metodología empleadas son las clásicas de la Escuela Francesa de Demografía Histórica, abordándose la siempre crucial reconstitución de familias a través de un sondeo alfabético de apellidos extendido al conjunto de la ciudad. Es de notar asimismo que en todo momento se ha procurado atender a los comportamientos sociodiferenciales. Los resultados revelan rasgos propios de una población urbana -ante todo, hiperfecundidad e hipermortalidad-, pero también su relación con un entorno rural caracterizado por valores moderados. Por su parte, los análisis sociodiferenciales han puesto de manifiesto la existencia de divergencias apreciables, pero no demasiado marcadas, como corresponde seguramente a una ciudad de tamaño más bien modesto.

Synthesis of the doctoral thesis about the population from Santiago de Compostela between the first half of the Seventeenth-century and the second half of the Nineteenth-century. The sources and the method used are the French Demographic History School ones. We deal with the always important family's reconstruction made by an alphabetic approach of surnames spread to the whole of the city. It is remarkable that we have always tried to focus on the sociodifferential behavious. The results reveal the typical features of an urban population -mainly, hyperfertility and hypermortality-, but also its relationship with a rural environment caracterized by moderate values. Moreover, the sociodifferential test has revealed the existance of considerable differences, although they are not too mark, as it surely corresponds to a town with a rather modest size.
