El puente de Caya, hoy sepultado bajo un campo de cultivo, fue esencial para asegurar las comunicaciones entre Lisboa y Madrid. Al mismo tiempo, al situarse en la frontera entre los dos reinos, fue lugar de encuentro como el celebrado para determinar la titularidad de las Molucas o las bodas reales del siglo XVIII.
La destrucción del puente obligó pasar el río por un vado o una barca, hasta que se construyó en el siglo XIX un nuevo puente y en el siglo XX un tercero, nominado José Saramago, que ha asegurado definitivamente la comunicación entre las dos capitales peninsulares.

The Caya Bridge, nowadays buried under a crop field, was essential to ensure communications between Lisbon and Madrid. In the same way, by being located in the border between the two kingdoms, it was a meeting place like the one held to determine the ownership of the Molucas or the royal weddings of the 18th century.
The destruction of the bridge forced to cross the river through a ford or a boat, until a new bridge was built in the 19th century and in the 20th century a third one, named José Saramago, that has definitely assured communication between the two peninsular capitals.
