In the Vélez Rubio area, the Alpine structure of the Maláguide Complex has been generated in several deformation stages. The first one generated an axial plane foliation associated with north vergente folds, which can be interpreted as related with the emplacement of the Maláguide Complex over the Alpujárride one. The second deformation stage is represented by an extensional detachment with a top-to-the-North sense of movement that thins the stratigraphic succession. Both stages took place previously to the Aquitanian age. The structures produced by the third deformation stage correspond to reverse and right-handed reverse faults with a top-to-the SE sense of movement, which deform the previous structures. This third stage was active during the Aquitanian times. During the Middle M iocene to Late Burdigalian times, took place the forth deformation stage took place, which produced a NW-SE shortening, accommodated by the thrusting of the Subbetic and Flyschs Trough Units Domains over the Maláguide Complex, and a simultaneous SW-NE extension, producing a detachment that exhumed the Alpujárride Complex.
