    La polémica sobre la licitud moral del teatro en el Siglo de Oro tuvo un curioso episodio en la Sevilla de fines del siglo XVI. Animado por su afán de medrar socialmente, el posadero Tomás Gutiérrez, dueño de una de las mejores hosterías de la ciudad, pretendió ingresar en la exclusiva cofradía sacramental del Sagrario de Sevilla. Sin embargo, fue rechazo porque anteriormente se había dedicado a la profesión teatral. El pleito subsiguiente observó interesantes alegatos a favor del teatro y tuvo como uno de sus actores un testigo de excepción: el escritor Miguel de Cervantes.

    The controversy over the moral legality of theater in the Golden Age had a curious episode in Seville at the end of the sixteenth century. Encouraged by his desire to prosper socially, innkeeper Tomás Gutiérrez, owner of one of the best hostels in the city, tried to enter the exclusive sacramental brotherhood of the Sagrario of Seville. However, it was rejected because previously he had dedicated himselfto the theater profession. The subsequent lawsuit observed interesting allegations in favor of the theater and had as one of its actors an exceptional witness: the writer Miguel de Cervantes.
