El Sahel Occidental (Burkina Faso, Chad, Malí, Mauritania y Níger) es una subregión de África en la que desde antiguo encontramos múltiples actores delincuenciales dedicados a los diversos tráficos ilícitos que aquí confluyen. Desde tiempos más recientes proliferan también en el mismo grupo terroristas yihadistas salafistas. Diversos analistas dan más importancia a los primeros que a los segundos, y otros consideran a estos últimos como meros delincuentes que se esconden detrás de los mensajes yihadistas.
Nuestro análisis considera que es crucial dar a cada una de las dos dimensiones la importancia que tiene, y ello para evitar confusiones debilitando las respuestas.

The Western Sahel (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger) is an African sub-region where we find a myriad of criminal actors who focuse on illicit trafficking present in the area. Since more recent times, Jihadist Salafist terrorist groups are also becoming active in this sub-region. A number of analysts pay more attention to criminal actors than to terrorists, and other analysts define the Jihadists as criminal who hide their criminal activities behind a religious&political label. Our analysis considers that it is crucial to pay attention to the specific relevance of the two dimensions in order to avoid confusion weakening the responses.
