    El pontificado de Juan Pablo II supuso la recuperación del relato vaticano respecto al proceso de construcción europea. Pío XII había sentado los cimientos de esa narrativa en los momentos iniciales de la unificación, cuando el comunismo se divisaba como la mayor amenaza para los intereses de la cristiandad. En las postrimerías de la Guerra Fría la evolución observada en los países de la órbita soviética generó nuevas oportunidades. La ampliación hacia el Este permitiría al Vaticano acrecentar su cuota de mercado en el marco de las confesiones religiosas, incrementando su influencia en el ámbito de las instituciones europeas.

    The Pontificate of John Paul II marked the recovery of a Vatican narrative regarding the process of European integration. Pius XII had laid the foundations for such a narrative during the initial stages of integration, when communism was seen as the biggest threat to the interests of Christianity. During the final stages of the Cold War, developments in countries within the Soviet orbit brought about new opportunities. The enlargement to the East allowed the Vatican to expand its market share in the context of religious confessions, increasing its influence within European institutions.
