Resumen de El Seinal: una efímera fortificación portuguesa en la costa africana del Estrecho de Gibraltar

  En febrero de 1549 el rey portugués D. Juan III ordenó la construcción de un fuerte en el Seinal, una colina próxima al mar cuya situación en la parte central del Estrecho de Gibraltar y su emplazamiento le hacían un lugar idóneo para la defensa de Alcazarseguer. En el mes de agosto se paralizan las obras tras un informe negativo, y se da orden de evacuar el Seinal y Alcazarseguer. En 1925 el ejército español construye una batería y un puesto de observación, destruyendo parcialmente la fortificación portuguesa.

  En la visita efectuada en 2006 se pudo identificar un muro en el lado oeste, y en la zona NW se observaron sillares tallados toscamente que podrían corresponder a estructuras anteriores.

  La actual remodelación militar del espacio ha afectado de nuevo a los restos. El uso continuado como zona militar ha impedido la realización de una investigación detallada.

  In February 1549, the portuguese king D. Juan III ordered the construction of a fort on the Seinal, a hill next to the sea whose situation in the middle of the Strait of Gibraltar and its location made it an ideal place for the defense of Alcazarseguer. In August, the works were halted following a negative report, and the evacuation of the Seinal and Alcazarseguer is odered. In 1925, the Spanish army built a battery and lookout, partially destroyeng the Portuguese fortification.

  On a visit in 2006 a wall on the west side could be identified and in the northwest area roughly hewn ashlars that could correspond to previous structures were observed.

  The current military remodeling of the space has affected the ruins once again. Its continued use a military area has prevented the realization of a detailed research.
