This paper offers a first approach to the procedures of emblematic imagination through medieval and, in some cases, early modern heraldic examples. Both the creative role of the productive imagination and the imitative role of the reproductive one are analyzed through the study of some specific cases: canting arms, heraldic monsters and grotesque figures, pointing out the role that facetious wit play in the composition of new heraldic devices. The way in which the inventiveness works in the emblematics matches with conceptist poetics.
