    Este artículo explica el crucial papel que España desempeñó en la preparación durante los primeros meses de 1799 de la expedición científica de Humboldt a la América Española. ¿Cuáles fueron las razones de su llegada a España? ¿Cómo obtuvo el permiso del Imperio Español para llevar a cabo esta empresa? Y ¿cuáles eran las expectativas de la Corte? El texto responde a estas preguntas en lo que respecta a negociaciones diplomáticas pero también aborda la colaboración de Humboldt con la comunidad científica local, principalmente en Madrid, así como los estudios geográficos que emprendió durante su itinerario por la Península. Finalmente, el artículo reflexiona sobre las oportunidades que se abrieron merced a este acuerdo, tanto para Humboldt como para la Corona Española.

    This article explains the crucial role Spain played in the preparation of Humboldt’s scientific expedition to Spanish America during the first months of 1799. What were the reasons for his arrival in Spain? How did he obtain permission from the Spanish Empire for this unprecedented expedition? And what did Madrid expect? The text answers these questions regarding the diplomatic negotiations, but also discusses Humboldt’s collaboration with the local scientific community, mainly in Madrid, and the geographical studies he undertook during his itinerary through the peninsula.

    Finally it reflects on the opportunities that opened up through this arrangement, for Humboldt as well as for the Spanish Crown.
