    A mediados del siglo XVII, el tribunal del Santo Oficio de Nápoles procesó por judaizar a los Vaaz, una familia de cristianos nuevos portugueses que había conseguido introducirse en las capas aristocráticas del reino. Las familias nobles con las que habían emparentado sintieron amenazada su reputación. Las autoridades civiles y eclesiásticas, y el patriciado urbano, intervinieron. Las reacciones de todos ellos reflejan el estado en el que se hallaba ese proceso de ennoblecimiento y asimilación social que habían emprendido unos cincuenta años atrás.

    In the middle of the 17th century the Santo Oficio Court in Naples prosecuted for Judaizing the Vaaz, a family of born-again Portuguese Christians who had managed to introduce themselves in the aristocratic circles of the kingdom. The noble families which whom they had established familiar relationships felt their reputation was threatened. The civilian and ecclesiastical authorities and the city patricians had to act. The reactions of all of them reflect the state of the process to become part of the nobility and of social assimilation that they had started fifty years beforehand.
