    La actitud del PSOE hacia la OTAN fue el último gran ajuste ideológico impulsado por Felipe González durante la primera legisla-tura socialista. El «neutralismo activo» de la mayoría del nuevo antifranquismo surgido desde 1956 impregnó al renovado PSOE, pero fue efímero, ya que el partido de posguerra se había manifestado partidario de la Alianza Atlántica aunque predominara la postura europeísta. La «ambigüedad calculada» del moderado líder socialista al pedir un referéndum permitió aglutinar el voto de la izquierda radical en 1982, pero tensionó la sociedad española, endeudó al partido y retrasó la adquisición de una cultura internacional. El viraje se produjo al poco de la llegada al poder debido a la necesidad que tenía el gobierno socialista de des-bloquear la entrada de España en la Comunidad Económica Europea

    The position of the PSOE with regard to the NATO was the last great ideological change imposed by Felipe González, during the first socialist legislature. The «active neutrality» sustained by the majority of the new anti francoist force after 1956 was accepted by the renovated PSOE. It was though a shortlived phenomenon since the post-war party had been in favour of the Atlantic Alliance, despite its pro-European stance. The «deliberate ambiguity» of the moderate socialist leader in relation to a referendum to leave NATO allowed its party to concentrate the vote of the radical left in 1982. However, it created tensions in Spanish society, indebted the party and delayed its acquisi-tion of an international culture. The shift in this field to a pro-NATO stance occurred shortly after the PSOE came to power, since the new Government needed it to unlock the entry of Spain in the European Economic Community
