Resumen de El Alfabeto Manual adoptado por el Real Colegio de Sordo-mudos de Madrid (1805-1814). Una laguna historiográfica resuelta

  Presentar el Alfabeto Manual que el Real Colegio de Sordomudos de Madrid adoptó, en 1805, para la educación de sus alumnos sordos, hasta ahora desconocido, es el objetivo primordial de este trabajo.

  Cuando España —pionera de la educación de los sordos entre los siglos XVI y XVII— recupera este campo pedagógico con la creación del Real Colegio de Sordomudos de Madrid a cargo de la Sociedad Económica Matritense de los Amigos del País, necesita un recurso comunicativo que, sustituyendo al oído, facilite entender y enseñar a sus alumnos. El hallazgo documental de las láminas que contienen dicho Alfabeto, que ahora se presenta por primera vez, constituye la aportación fundamental de una investigación que aspira a llenar una laguna hondamente sentida en la historia de la educación especial de los sordos de este país.

  The basic aim of this work is to present a hithertounknown Manual Alphabet introduced by the Real Colegio de Sordo-mudos de Madrid [Royal Madrid School for the Deaf and Dumb] in 1805 for the instruction of their deaf students.

  That year saw a revival of attention to teaching of the deaf in Spain —a pioneer in the education of deaf students in the 16th and 17th centuries— with the creation of the Real Colegio de Sordo-mudos de Madrid under the auspices of the Sociedad Económica Matritense de los Amigos del País. This meant that a means of communicating with and teaching students was needed to replace hearing. The newly-discovered plates containing this Alphabet, here presented for the first time, form the core of an investigation that seeks to fill a serious gap in the history of special education for the deaf in Spain.
