  El Sahel es una gran franja que recorre África de oeste a este, y en esta región geográfica se unen pueblos árabes, bereberes y negros, distintas formas de subsistencia y también diferentes confesiones religiosas. Además, y como factor agravante de la situación, las fronteras en la región son muy porosas y difíciles de controlar; y la gran extensión territorial de los países hace que existan muchas zonas que escapan del control del Estado, caracterizado por lo general por la debilidad de sus instituciones.

  Todos estos condicionantes, junto a un enorme crecimiento demográfico y una población extremadamente joven, sin expectativas de vida, han permitido que se incrementen las amenazas y la inestabilidad. El desafío de los países sahelianos es hoy garantizar, a través de la reforma de sus fuerzas de seguridad, la protección de sus poblaciones; y, al mismo tiempo, fomentar el desarrollo para asentar una paz duradera y estable para toda la región.

  The Sahel is a stretch that runs from West to East Africa. In this geographical region coexist together Arab, Berber and black peoples, different livelihoods and different faiths. In addition, as an aggravating factor of the situation, the national borders are very porous and its control is very difficult to control. The vast territory of the countries means that there are many areas beyond the control of the state, generally characterized by weak institutions. All these factors, together with a huge demographic growth and an extremely young population without life expectancy, have allowed the threats and instability increase. Nowadays, the challenge of the Sahelian countries is protect their populations through reform of its security forces; and at the same time, encourage the development to lay a lasting and stable peace for the entire region.
