  This paper argues that the quest for and attainment of higher education in the United States of America by some Nigerians in the early days of British colonial rule in Nigeria provoked certain reactions. A noticeable reaction was that some of these Nigerians returned to their country with the aim of establishing educational institutions patterned after the Hampton and Tuskegee models.

  This situation was not well received by the colonial government in Nigeria and the colonial office in London who had always viewed American certificated Nigerians as inferior to those of the British. Thus, the article gives a detailed account of the intrigues and politics of education in southern Nigeria during the colonial period using the experiences of N. D. Oyerinde, Eyo Ita, and Nnamdi Azikiwe as reference points
