El artículo recoge unas reflexiones historiográficas sobre el concepto de �historia contemporánea� y sobre la noción de �documento histórico�.
En el primer caso, subraya la básica contradicción entre los dos términos constitutivos del sintagma, que remiten a campos semánticos no conjugables.
Y, sin embargo, el concepto ha conseguido arraigar para denotar la era histórica abierta entre finales del siglo XVIII y principios del siglo XIX. En el segundo caso, subraya que el documento no es sólo y exclusivamente el texto escrito, de mayor o menor enjundia y calidad, sino todo tipo de artefactos humanos que sirven para informar y transmitir conocimiento sobre el pasado de la humanidad en sus distintas y variadas facetas.

The aim of the article is to set up some reflections over the concept of �Contemporary History� and the idea of �historical document�. In the first case, its purpose is to emphasize the basic contradiction of both terms of the constructiont. However, the concept has been firmly established in order to define the historical era opened between the end of the XVIII Century and the beginning of the XIX Century. In the second case, its purpose is to underline the fact that a document is not only or exclusively a written text but any sort of human products able to inform about the human past in its different faces and forms.
