Although traditional forces must of course be moderated, one can clearly state that comfort was not a characteristic of popular housing in Castile. The demand for new manu- factured products started slowly, related to the market, the availability of money and the ap- pearances, and only gradually reached more segments of society. Workers tended to satisfy only their basic needs, and clothes, furniture, decoration, plates and table cloths were not al - ways seen as indispensable. By looking at the demand for new products of the popular sec- tors of society, we deepen our knowledge of the “social history of consumption” and of the history of material culture during the Ancien Régime.
