¿Puede la escuela del siglo XXI educar a los ciudadanos y ciudadanas del siglo XXI?

    Los graves problemas de nuestro mundo reclaman una urgente respuesta educativa por parte del sistema escolar, pero esa respuesta no es adecuada, pues dicho sistema sigue funcionando con características muy tradicionales. La educación para la ciudadanía se presenta como una posibilidad de reorientar la educación hacia finalidades más acordes con los retos que ésta debe afrontar actualmente; sin embargo, entre las declaraciones e iniciativas oficiales y la realidad de la enseñanza existe aún una gran distancia. En ese sentido, es urgente redefinir las finalidades básicas de la educación escolar y recuperar su dimensión de educación para la ciudadanía democrática, otorgando un papel importante a la participación. Como camino a seguir se propone trabajar en torno a problemas sociales y ambientales relevantes de nuestro mundo en el marco de un currículum integrado.

    The serious problems of our world demand an urgent educative answer by the school system, but so far that answer is not adequate, because the system continues working with very traditional characteristics. Citizenship education appears as a possibility of reorienting the education towards purposes more in agreement with the challenges that are currently faced; nevertheless, between the official declarations and initiatives and the reality of education there is still a great distance. In that sense, it is urgent to redefine the basic aims of school education and to recover its dimension of education for democratic citizenship, granting an important role to participation. The proposal would be to work around relevant social and environmental problems of our world within the framework of an integrated curriculum.
