En el Islam medieval, la ciudad careció -en general- de autonomía política y de reconocimiento institucional. El fenómeno histórico de las ciudades secundarias es discutible y complejo pues es una realidad fluctuante y débil, mediatizada por las relaciones entre Ias comunidades rurales y el Estado. En Berja, el desdoblamiento de funciones defensivas y comerciales, la nómala existencia de dos mezquitas mayores y la distribución de servicios entre Ias alquerías o pueblos del valle impidió la acumulación de actividades en un gran centro urbano amurallado (Villavieja). Ello hizo imposible crear una ciudad en La Alpujarra medieval.

In the Islam of the Middle Ages, the city hadn't got a political autonomy and a institutional status. The history of the secondary's towns is subject of discuss because they represent a weak reality conditioned by the relations between the rural communities and the State. In Berja, its double defensive and commercial functions, the strange existence of two great mosques, and the distribution of services between the farmhouses or the valley's villages, obstructed the stablishment of a great urban center (Villavieja). It was impossible to create a city in the medieval Alpujarra.
