Resumen de Fondos y colecciones fotográficos del Archivo y Biblioteca Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid: descripción y análisis

En diciembre del año 2002 se inauguraba la Biblioteca Regional de Madrid "Joaquín Leguina" y poco después lo hacía el Archivo Regional de Madrid en el año 2003. Ambas instituciones forman lo que se conoce como complejo El Águila, un conjunto arquitectónico del siglo XIX de estilo neomudéjar. El archivo es un centro de primera magnitud en dónde se conservan, custodian y tratan los documentos generados por la Administración autonómica de la Comunidad de Madrid desde el año 1983. Así mismo, se conservan en este centro los documentos generados por las instituciones antecesoras a la Comunidad de Madrid, los archivos históricos de los municipios de la Comunidad, los de empresas públicas, familiares, y otros procedentes de compras y donaciones. La Biblioteca Regional es otro centro especializado que se encarga de la conservación, gestión y tratamiento documental del patrimonio Bibliográfico y Documental de la Comunidad de Madrid. Una de sus funciones es garantizar el acceso por varias vías a los documentos que custodia, además de fomentar y difundir la cultura madrileña por medio de conferencias, exposiciones, guías bibliográficas, etc.
Es objeto de este trabajo dar a conocer a la comunidad científica los diecisiete fondos y colecciones fotográficas ubicados en el Archivo y Biblioteca Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid, en los que se conservan un millón y medio de fotografías de procedencia pública y privada desde los años 1890 hasta la actualidad. Existe una gran variedad de tipologías y formatos entre los que podemos destacar las albúminas, los cianotipos, las placas de vidrio, y los positivos y negativos en papel. De los diecisiete fondos y colecciones, once se ubican en el Archivo Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid y seis en la Biblioteca Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid. Hasta la fecha los fondos y colecciones objeto de estudio son: Arenillas, Antonio "El Bailarín", Cristobal Portillo, Diputación Provincial de Madrid, Fábrica de Cervezas y Hielo Mahou, Galerías Preciados, Inclusa, Instituto Cardenal Cisneros, José Lope de Lope, Juan Moya, Martín Santos Yubero, Tarjetas Postales, Ripollés, Ragel, Álbum del Servicio Forestal de la Diputación de Madrid, y Álbum de la Brigada Obrera y Topográfica.
En este trabajo se aúnan los materiales fotográficos de ambas instituciones, Archivo y Biblioteca que durante mucho tiempo compartieron sede en la Diputación provincial, posteriormente se separaron y actualmente vuelven a estar ubicadas en el mismo recinto. Sin embargo, el acceso a sus documentos se realiza por diferentes vías, la Biblioteca emplea el Catálogo como sistema de recuperación, mientras que el Archivo utiliza bases de datos Excel, guías, inventarios y catálogos, por lo que es difícil establecer un sistema interoperable para los materiales comunes como son las fotografías.
La metodología aplicada para el desarrollo de este trabajo ha sido en primer lugar el estudio de las fuentes históricas sobre los materiales a tratar para ubicarlos en un contexto, además se ha analizado y recopilado la información sobre los fondos y colecciones fotográficas del Archivo y Biblioteca Regional Madrid y también de estas instituciones. También se han analizado colecciones de otras instituciones con el fin de contrastar y verificar datos que se consideraban importantes para esta investigación. En segundo lugar se ha realizado un inventario y una ficha sistemática formada por veintiún campos basada en la norma internacional ISAD-G para la descripción de los fondos y colecciones del Archivo y Biblioteca.
Como resultado del análisis y estudio de las materias de cada uno de los fondos se han elaborado una serie de índices y listados que permitirán al usuario conocer los temas y materias que se encuentran en el Archivo y Biblioteca Regional y en qué fondo se encuentran ubicadas. Para ello se ha elaborado el Listado Fobarcam y el índice cruzado de materias. En este proceso se han consultado el Tesauro de Unesco, el de Arte y Arquitectura de J. P. Getty Trust, Thesaurus for Graphic Material de la Library of Congress así como los listados de materias elaborados por el Archivo Regional y el Tesauro Portillo. El listado Fobarcam pretende ser el inicio de un listado mayor y más completo, que podrán ir ampliado tanto el personal de las instituciones como los usuarios e investigadores, con el fin de obtener un tesauro más completo. El segundo listado es un índice cruzado de materias que permite relacionar las voces o materias con los fondos en los que se encuentran depositados los materiales facilitando de esta forma la recuperación de información a los usuarios.
La investigación se completa con el inventario, análisis estudio y descripción del fondo Ripollés, formado por 264 imágenes en varios formatos, positivos, negativos, vidrios y estereoscópicas. En este trabajo se han inventariado 217 imágenes ya que se detectaron copias de positivos y negativos. Para el análisis documental de las imágenes se ha empleado el gestor Photon, un programa formado por varios pliegos de especificaciones que pretende obtener el máximo nivel en la descripción de las fotografías. Para ello el programa ha agrupado las principales normas y recomendaciones ISAD-G, ISBDc, MARC21, EXIF. Photon es un sistema multiusuario por lo que soporta que varios usuarios trabajen al mismo tiempo con el mismo programa. Respecto a las especificaciones propias del programa en el interfaz se integran todas las áreas y campos de descripción junto a un visor para las fotografías. También cuenta con un módulo para la edición de autoridades. Así mismo, Photon permite que todas las herramientas de trabajo estén disponibles en la misma pantalla.
El resultado de esta investigación es la guía-inventario de los 17 fondos fotográficos actuales que posee el Archivo y Biblioteca Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid. La temática de las fotografías es variada: costumbrismo, tauromaquia, deportes, paisajes, sociedad, personajes públicos, marketing y publicidad, etc. sin olvidar que todos o casi todos los fondos presentan a Madrid y su Comunidad como escenario fotográfico. Para analizar los fondos se ha elaborado una ficha sistemática formada por 21 campos basada en las normas Internacionales ISAD-G. Para recuperar la información se ha elaborado el listado Fobarcam (Fondos y colecciones del Archivo y Biblioteca Regional de Madrid) formado por: un listado alfabético de materias y un índice cruzado que nos permite recuperar por materias las fotografías de cada fondo.
Hay que destacar que muchos de estos fondos son inéditos y desconocidos hasta la fecha, especialmente el conjunto de fotografías del fotoperiodista David Seymour correspondiente a la serie de "Los Niños de la guerra", encargo realizado por UNICEF para fotografiar los efectos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial en los niños, o el fondo Ripollés que destaca por la temática costumbrista de sus fotografías, además de por la relevancia de la figura de Andrés Ripollés y Baranda , militar, ingeniero, fotógrafo y Vicepresidente de la Real Sociedad Fotográfica de Madrid entre los años 1899 y 1904.
Por último señalar como resumen de las conclusiones las siguientes: a) la fotografía se halla dispersa en archivos y bibliotecas de los centros públicos. Se constata la necesidad de poner en valor los fondos y colecciones fotográficos de las centros públicos con el fin de hacerlas visibles para su análisis y en consecuencia para la difusión de contenidos; b) es necesaria una política de actuación conjunta de las instituciones públicas, y c) Esta investigación es la primera que se realiza de manera global sobre los fondos y colecciones fotográficas en el Archivo y Biblioteca Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid, y ello ha permitido sacar a la luz conjuntos documentales sobre los que no se disponía de información.

The "Joaquín Leguina" Regional Library was inaugurated in December of 2002 and shortly afterwards, in the year 2003, the Regional Archive of Madrid. Both institutions form part of what is known as the "Complejo El Aguila", a 19th century neo-Mudejar architectural ensemble. The Archive is a center of prime importance, where documents generated by the Administration of the Autonomous Community of Madrid have been preserved, stored and processed since 1983. The center also preserves documents generated by predecessors of the Community of Madrid, the historical archives of the municipalities of this Community, those of public and family-owned companies and others from acquisitions and donations. The Regional Library is a specialized center which is responsible for the documentary preservation, management and processing of the bibliographic and documentary heritage of the Community of Madrid. One of its functions is to guarantee access to the documents in its custody through various channels, in addition to promoting and disseminating cultural aspects of Madrid by means of conferences, exhibitions, bibliographic guides, etc.
The aim of this work is to make known to the scientific community the seventeen fonds located in the Archive and Regional Library of the Community of Madrid, which preserves one and a half million photographs from both public and private sources since 1890 up to the present. There is a wide variety of types and formats, among which we draw special attention to the albumins, cyanotypes, glass plates and paper positives and negatives. Of the seventeen fonds and collections, eleven are located in the Regional Archive of the Community of Madrid and six in the Regional Library of the Community of Madrid. Up to the present date, the fonds and collections that have been the subject of study are the following: Arenillas, Antonio "El Bailarín", Cristobal Portillo, Diputación Provincial de Madrid, Fábrica de Cervezas y Hielo Mahou, Galerías Preciados, Inclusa, Instituto Cardenal Cisneros, José Lope de Lope, Juan Moya, Martín Santos Yubero, Tarjetas Postales, Ripollés, Ragel, Album of the Forest Service of the Regional Government of Madrid and Album of the Worker's and Topographic Brigade.
Both the Archive and the Regional Library of Madrid have been developing an active acquisition, processing and dissemination policy for historical fonds and collections, which includes the photographs. This work brings together the photographic material of both institutions, the Archive and the Library, which for many years shared headquarters in the Diputación Provincial, after which they separated and they are now, once again, located in the same place. However, access to documents is made through different channels. The Library uses the Catalogue as a retrieval system, while the Archive uses Excel data bases, guides, inventories and catalogues, making it difficult to establish an interoperable system for shared materials such as the photographs.
The methodology on which this work is based begins by studying the historical sources about the materials to be dealt with, in order to place them into context, in addition to analyzing and gathering information about the photographic fonds and collections of the Archive and Regional Library of Madrid. Collections of other institutions have also been analyzed in order to compare and verify data considered important for this research. Next, an inventory has been prepared, along with a systematic data sheet consisting of twenty one elements for the description of the fonds and collections of the Archive and the Library, based on the ISAD-G international standard.
As a result of the analysis and study of the material in each of the fonds, a series of indexes and lists have been created that will allow the user to know what themes and subjects can be found in the Archive and Regional Library and in which fond they are located. To this end, the Fobarcam List has been prepared, as well as a cross-referenced subject index. In this process, the UNESCO Thesaurus, the Art and Architecture Thesaurus of J. P. Getty Trust and the Thesaurus for Graphic Material of the Library of Congress have been consulted, as well as the lists of subjects drawn up by the Regional Archive and the Portillo Thesaurus. The Fobarcam List is meant to be the start of a larger and more complete list, which could be enlarged by the staff of the institutions, as well as by users and researches, with the aim of obtaining a more complete thesaurus. The second list is a cross-referenced subject index that makes it possible to relate themes and subjects with the fonds in which the material is deposited, thus facilitating the retrieval of information for users.
The research is completed with the inventory, analysis, study and description of the Ripollés fond, which is made up of 264 images in various formats; positives, negatives, glass and stereoscopic. In this work, 217 images have been inventoried, as copies of positives and negatives were found. A Photon manager was used for the documentary analysis of the images, a program made up of various specification sheets that seeks to obtain the highest level of description of the photographs. To achieve this, the program consolidates the main rules and recommendations of ISAD-G, ISBDc, MARC21 and EXIF. Photon is a multi-user system that supports several users at the same time with the same program. With respect to program specifications, all the descriptive areas and elements have been integrated in the interface along with a photograph viewer. There is also a module for editing authorities. Photon makes all the work tools available on the same screen.
The result of this research is a guide-inventory of the 17 photographic fonds currently housed by the Archive and Regional Library of the Community of Madrid. The photographic motifs are varied: costumbrismo (everyday life), bullfighting, landscapes, society, public figures, marketing and advertising, etc., without forgetting that all or nearly all of the fonds present Madrid and its Community as the photographic scenario. In order to analyze the fonds, a systematic data sheet consisting of 21 elements has been prepared, based on ISAD-G International Standards. For the retrieval of information, the Fobarcam (acronym of the Spanish for Fonds and Collections of the Archive and Regional Library of Madrid) List has been drawn up, consisting of an alphabetical list of subjects and a cross-referenced index, which makes it possible to retrieve photographs by subject from each fond.
It is important to underline that many of these fonds are currently unpublished and unknown, especially the group of photographs belonging to the series of the photojournalist David Seymour, "Children of War", commissioned by UNICEF to photograph the impact of World War II on children, or the Ripollés Fond, which stands out for the costumbrista daily life scenes of its photographs, in addition to the relevance of Andrés Ripollés y Baranda, soldier, engineer, photographer and Vicepresident of the Real Sociedad Fotográfica of Madrid from 1899 to 1904.
Lastly, as a summary of the findings, we would mention the following: a) the photographs are dispersed in archives and libraries of public centers. It is necessary to give recognition to the value of the photographic fonds and collections in public centers in order to make them visible for analysis and, consequently, the dissemination of their content; b) there is a need for a joint action policy between public institutions and c) this research is the first comprehensive investigation to be carried out on the photographic fonds and collections of the Archive and Regional Library of Madrid, making it possible to bring to light documentary collections for which no information was previously available.
