El Siglo XVIII en la Catedral de Orihuela : la Nueva Imagen

Abstract

La presente investigación ha tenido como uno de sus principales objetivos la puesta en valor de toda una serie de actualizaciones y realizaciones que tuvieron lugar durante el siglo XVIII en la Catedral de Orihuela y que modificaron sustancialmente su aspecto, actualizándolo a las nuevas corrientes estilísticas y apostando por una estética que mostrase la preeminencia catedralicia sobre los demás templos diocesanos. Todo ello a la vez que se muestra una correlación entre Orihuela y las demás catedrales del mundo hispano, confirmando que el Setecientos fue uno de los momentos de máximo apogeo y esplendor para estos edificios. Para este fin se han recogido todas las obras que han versa-do sobre aspectos puntuales y se han confrontado para obtener una visión unitaria de todos los ám-bitos artísticos, aportando hipótesis alternativas e intentando subsanar las posibles lagunas que toda-vía poseía la historiografía acerca de este tema. Para ello la labor investigadora en los diferentes ar-chivos de la ciudad de Orihuela ha sido fundamental, ya que ha permitido por una parte corroborar teorías y por otra, lanzar nuevas hipótesis acerca de los diferentes ámbitos del templo catedralicio en esta centuria. Para ello se ha dividido la presente investigación en tres bloques con el fin de concentrar la información y acotar los temas de estudio. El primero de ellos es el dedicado a la contextualización general de la catedral en su entorno más inmediato, haciendo patente la importancia del contexto económico, pero también el social y el cultural para poder comprender la evolución del edificio. En un segundo apartado se versa sobre los promotores interesados en resaltar la importancia del edificio y de dotarlo de obras patrocinadas por ellos mismos. Dentro de este apartado se destaca la impor-tancia de la Junta de Parroquia, institución laica que será la encargada de la financiación y ejecución de la mayoría de obras y reformas que se llevan a cabo, así como la confección de todo tipo de or-namentos. El aspecto financiero de ésta, nutrida por una buena partida diezmal, será esencial para entender su funcionamiento y también su carga de responsabilidad dentro del engranaje administra-tivo de la catedral. En tercer lugar se intenta hacer una comparación entre la Catedral de Orihuela y los demás templos catedralicios hispanos, ofreciendo una comparativa que la sitúa en un movimiento común a todas ellas que se dará en esta centuria y que tendrá por objetivo principal y primordial, la actualización de su imagen. De acuerdo con esta premisa, se analizan todos los ámbitos que experi-mentaron algún tipo de modificación o fueron parte de un programa de dotación artística o mobiliar en la seo oriolana. Con este fin, se ha pretendido construir una relato unitario que no mostrase ses-gos, sino que uniese todos los puntos de vista tanto históricos como artísticos que conformaron la imagen dieciochesca de la catedral. La redacción de este trabajo ha llevado a mostrar una serie de conclusiones entre las cuales sobresale la conexión de la Catedral de Orihuela con sus homónimas hispanas en cuanto a puesta a punto y ejecución de programas de reforma durante este siglo. Este hecho podrá enlazarse directa-mente con el modelo propuesto para la Capilla Mayor desde un principio o con la dotación de un ajuar lo suficientemente abundante y representativo de la condición del propio templo. El culto a la Eucaristía será también uno de los temas recurrentes, que permitirá una renovación del ajuar así co-mo actuaciones a nivel arquitectónico bastante destacadas, unidas a la prosperidad económica que experimentaría la zona a lo largo de la centuria y que sería, en gran medida, la principal responsable de todos estos cambios.

One of the main objectives of this research has been to highlight a series of updates and achieve-ments that took place during the 18th century in the Orihuela Cathedral and which substantially modified its appearance, updating it to the new stylistic trends and betting on an aesthetic that would show the pre-eminence of the cathedral over other diocesan temples. All this while showing a correlation between Orihuela and the other cathedrals in the Hispanic world, confirming that the seventeenth century was one of the moments of maximum apogee and splendor for these buildings. To this end, all the works that have dealt with specific aspects have been collected and compared to obtain a unitary vision of all the artistic fields, providing alternative hypotheses and trying to fill the possible gaps that historiography still had on this subject. To this end, the research work in the dif-ferent archives of the city of Orihuela has been fundamental, since it has allowed, on the one hand, to corroborate theories and, on the other, to launch new hypotheses about the different areas of the cathedral in this century. To this end, the present investigation has been divided into three blocks in order to concen-trate the information and limit the subjects of study. The first of these is dedicated to the general contextualization of the cathedral in its most immediate surroundings, making clear the importance of the economic context, but also the social and cultural context in order to understand the evolu-tion of the building. The second section deals with the promoters interested in highlighting the im-portance of the building and providing it with works sponsored by themselves. Within this section, the importance of the Parish Council is highlighted, a secular institution that will be in charge of financing and executing most of the works and reforms that are carried out, as well as making all kinds of ornaments. The financial aspect of this one, nourished by a good decimal item, will be es-sential to understand its functioning and also its load of responsibility within the administrative gear of the cathedral. Thirdly, an attempt is made to compare Orihuela Cathedral with the other Hispanic cathedral temples, offering a comparison that places it in a movement common to all of them that will take place in this century and that will have as its main and fundamental objective, the updating of its image. In accordance with this premise, all the areas that underwent some kind of modifica-tion or were part of an artistic endowment or furnishing program in Orihuela cathedral are analysed. To this end, an attempt has been made to build a unitary account that does not show biases but ra-ther unites all the historical and artistic points of view that shaped the eighteenth-century image of the cathedral. The drafting of this work has led to a series of conclusions among which the connection of the Orihuela Cathedral with its Hispanic counterparts in terms of development and implementation of reform programs during this century stands out. This fact can be directly linked to the model proposed for the Main Chapel from the beginning or with the provision of a sufficiently abundant and representative of the condition of the temple itself. The worship of the Eucharist will also be one of the recurring themes, which will allow a renovation of the trousseau as well as quite out-standing architectural actions, linked to the economic prosperity that the area would experience throughout the century and which would be, to a great extent, the main responsible for all these changes.
