The study of the socio-natural landscape of the Bay of Cadiz requires knowledge
of multiple aspects and scientific disciplines. The existence of diverse sources of
information, as well as different methodological approaches proposed from within
sciences such as geology, geography and traditional historiographical currents,
make it necessary for us to review the existing research to date on this problem
and to reconsider it from the perspective of the historical landscape, more
specifically from the historical-ecological approach of Riparia, proposed by
Professor E. Hermon, consisting of the interpretation of the landscape through
the interaction of the societies of the past with the environment.
To carry out this research, we will resort to the analysis of classical literary
sources, historical cartography, data obtained from archaeological records
carried out to date, as well as the compilation of a general state of the art on the
history of the landscape and the research carried out on the evolution of the Cadiz
coastline.
Therefore, this thesis is carried out from a multidisciplinary approach based on
the combination of historical, archaeological and geographical methods, the
geomorphological analysis of the coastal landscape and, finally, the use and
analysis through Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The project aims to be
able to carry out the processes of modification and topographic reconstruction,
as well as the re-articulation of the territory that would comprise the Bay of Cadiz
in the first moments of the High Roman Imperial period, more specifically at the
beginning of the second half of the 1st century AD.
