Abstract
Pepe Carvalho, el singular detective creado por Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, ha sido el
personaje literario más adaptado por el audiovisual desde la reinstauración de la democracia.
En el periodo 1976-2005 ha sido objeto de nada más y nada menos que tres películas, una serie de televisión y once telefilmes. Fuertemente connotado ideológicamente por su autor, su vida literaria, pero también la audiovisual, se entrecruza con la vida y los cambios de la sociedad española.
Esta tesis propone, a través del exhaustivo estudio de la producción de sus diferentes
adaptaciones y de la representación que en ellas se da, un análisis de cómo el cine y la
televisión han recogido dichos cambios.
Lo hace basándose en tres ejes: el político, el cultural y el espacial. Desde el punto de vista social, se pone especial relevancia en la articulación del sistema democrático; desde el cultural, en la emergencia de una industria audiovisual, pero también editorial, equiparable a la del resto de sociedades democráticas; finalmente, el espacio nosobligará a reconsiderar cómo ha cambiado el lugar que ocupa España en general y la ciudad de Barcelona en particular en el mundo.
El estudio nos ha permitido comprobar que las razones de su éxito para la industria
audiovisual reside en su gran versatilidad. Esta característica, sin embargo, también provoca que existan diversas maneras de interpretarlo ya sea política, como cultural y espacialmente.
También nos ha permitido comprobar el distinto desarrollo de la industria editorial y la
industria audiovisual en su incorporación a las dinámicas de la economía global. Además, se constata que la vida en la pantalla del personaje va a afectar considerablemente a su vida literaria.
Pepe Carvalho, the private investigator created by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, has been the literary character most adapted to film and television in Spain since the restoration of democracy. In the period 1976-2005, he has been the subject of three films, a television series and eleven TV movies. Strongly connoted ideologically by its author, his literary life, but also his screen adaptations, intersect with social changes in Spanish society. This thesis proposes, through the study of the production of its different adaptations and the representation that is given in them, an analysis of how cinema and television have depicted these changes. It does so through three main axes: politics, culture and geography. From the political point of view, special relevance is placed on the articulation of the democratic system; culturally, in the emergence of a new film and TV industry, without forgetting the literary world; finally, studying the space will force us to reconsider how the place occupied by Spain in general and the city of Barcelona in particular has changed during the last 40 years. The study has allowed us to verify that the main reason of film and TV interest in the character relays in his great versatility. Nevertheless, this feature, allows different interpretations of Pepe Carvalho in political, cultural o geographical terms. It has also allowed us to verify the different development of the publishing industry and the film and television industry into the dynamics of the global economy. In addition, it is noted that Pepe Carvalho literary evolution has been significantly affected by film and television adaptations.
