    Cataluña y Andalucía constituyen referencias fundamentales para el geógrafo y geólogo Juan Carandell (1893-1937). La compenetración con el paisaje y el modo de vida de Cataluña -su lugar de nacimiento- convertirá a esta tierra en un permanente punto de referencia y comparación, en un ideal casi utópico; por su parte, el significado de Andalucía -que constituye el contenido y la clave de buena parte de su obra, además de que andaluces fueron su esposa e hijos- es agridulce y contradictorio: ejemplar y maravilloso en la geografía, contrapunto del paraíso catalán en otros muchos aspectos y, a la vez, entrañable personal y familiarmente. De la producción científica de Carandell respecto a estas dos regiones y del contraste entre ambas en el pensamiento carandelliano se ocupa este trabajo.

    Catalonia and Andalucia constitute essential references to the geographer and geologist Juan Carandell (1893-1937). The understanding between him and the landscape and the way of life of Catalonia -his place of birth- will make of this land a constant reference point and point of comparison, an ideal almost utopian; what Andalucia meant for him -it constitutes the content and the key of a great part of his work, together with the fact that his wife and sons were from this landis bittersweet and contradictory: exemplary and marvellous in the geography, counterpoint to the catalan paradise in many other aspects and, at the same time, intimate in his personal and family life. This paper is devoted to review the scientific production of Carandell with respect to these two regions and the contrast between them as shown in his thinking.
