This paper presents the programmatic and practical innovations developed by the medieval Latin lexicography team of the "Glossarium Mediae Latinitatis Cataloniae" (GMLC). These innovations refer, on the one hand, to the extension and improvement of the application of the textual database "Corpus Documentale Latinum Cataloniae" (CODOLCAT) and its external and internal consultation services, an indispensable tool for the elaboration of the lexicographical articles of the GMLC itself and for parallel linguistic or historical research; and they also refer, on the other hand, to the digital edition and publication of the glossary itself. The reflection and the decisions taken to offer two complementary lexicographical instruments are the result of working on indissociable and confluent paths.

In our time, the digital lexicography offers many possibilities and, from our point of view, it is necessary to seize them. The fact that the “Glossarium Mediae Latinitatis Cataloniae” (GMLC) team can have a corpus of digitised work, composed of over 24,000 documents, allows editors to make sure that all forms exist in the corpus and, from there, analysing the appearances, deciding whether it is necessary or not to include a term. We will raise here an exercise of observation and reflection with the words referring to the concept of hunger. But let’s go one step further in our exercise. Even in a case of exclusion of certain terms, the fact that the team has chosen to publish the lexical database called “Corpus Documentale Latinum Cataloniae” (CODOLCAT) –that is, the digital corpus of texts of the glossary, conveniently republished, marked and treated– allows a way for the reader to verify the use of these terms. In other words, it is also the objective of this presentation to show how, thanks to the integration of the tools that our team can offer (the digital publication of our glossary and the lexical corpus), the reader will have more agile resources to access our medieval texts and to understand them.

The advent of modern technology means that lexicography today faces numerous challenges and a new requirement: to demonstrate to society the benefits of research carried out with public funds, in an immediate and tangible way.
Our work focusses on Latin texts produced between the 8th and 12th Centuries in one specific area, the Catalan linguistic domain. We aim to examine these texts making use of the latest tools made available by technology and to integrate two works of reference based on the texts themselves: the «Glossarium Mediae Latinitatis Cataloniae» (GMLC) and the «Corpus Documentale Latinum Cataloniae» (CODOLCAT). Linking the data bases incorporated in these tools will provide us multiple consulting options on multiple platforms (web pages and services; applications for tablets and mobiles, etc.), which can offer answers to questions posed from different perspectives within a wide interdisciplinary range (lexicographic, historical, juridical, philosophical, sociological and geographical) and thus contribute to the wider dissemination of our work, both within our field of specialisation and in society in general. The aim is to establish a way of integrating a dictionary and a collection of texts that is attractive and stimulating to other research teams, and can thus exert a direct impact on the scientific community of Latinists and lexicographers.

The development of the "Glossarium Mediae Latinitatis Cataloniae" (GMLC) is the result of the work of the Department of Latin Philology at the University of Barcelona in collaboration with the Department of Medieval Studies at the Milá y Fontanals Institution, of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). The leaders of this project want to make available to philologists, historians, jurists and anyone interested in the High Middle Ages notarial documents and texts produced in Catalonia between the ninth and the twelfth century, written testimony of the medieval Latin language and the incipient Romance language. Today the project is structured in two lines of work. The first one entails continuing the edition of the GMLC, led by Dr. J. Bastardas and currently by Dr P. J. Quetglas. The second one is the digitization of texts that constitute the starting material for the preparation of the glossary. The results of these two lines of work, complementary and inseparable, are being reflected in the trilingual reissue – Catalan, Spanish and English – of the first volume (letters A-D, fascicles 0-9, mostly sold) of the glossary. This reissue will be soon released.

This essay explores the main feature of Renaissance Humanism, i. e. the intellectual urge to freely approach written sources, original texts; firstly, those of pre-Christian antiquity, but also religious, mainly biblical texts. Humanism originated in Italy towards the end of the 13th century. By mind 16th century, at the time of Servetus’s death, it had already spread throughout most of Western Europe. Servetus, a Renaissance man and a humanist, became one of the main supporters of the intellectual and methodological need to go back to the original Latin, Greek and Hebrew works. He subjected these philological attitudes to the needs of theology.

// A question posed by the reading of two incomplete works, two partial translations of Plato’s "Timaeus", will serve to introduce us to the study of a specific field of Latin philosophical technical vocabulary. The two translations, one by Cicero (106-43 B.C.), the other by the Neoplatonist Calcidius (4th-5th century), will allow us to analyse the same philosophical question in two different contexts, to observe how this question is expressed differently in the lexical uses of the same language, Latin, but from two different periods, from two different times. We should bear in mind, however, that both authors, by the mere fact of having undertaken the translation of the same text, may have some common objectives: at the very least, and without doubt, a certain informative zeal; probably, a desire to enrich one’s own language (a sure desire in the case of Cicero); perhaps, the pretension of becoming an essential point of reference for the later tradition (in the case of Calcidius and for the medieval Platonic tradition, certainly achieved). In the course of this work, we will be able to deduce to what extent these supposed “objectives” were achieved. But, be that as it may, what will interest us here, above all, will be to analyse the work of translating the "Timaeus" in itself, from a lexical point of view and sticking to the study of some of the terms that shape the discussion raised by Plato in the first half of his "Timaeus".

The two characters whose names appear in the title of this article, Michael Servetus, John Calvin, to which a third name must be added, Sebastian Castellio (in French, Sébastien Châteillon or Castellion), were contemporaries, they knew each other, met each other and exchanged texts: their own texts –those written by them– and their interpretations –those they made of the texts written by the other two. Our intention is to show how the writings of these characters reflect their thoughts and actions with respect to a specific fact: death as punishment, the defence or criticism that death can be a degree on the scale of punishment for a sin, a mistake, a fault. Without losing this perspective, philological practice becomes, for them, not only a working method, but also a vital commitment. Some of the terms and expressions used in the polemic between Servetus, Calvin and Castellio are particularly significant, and it is not by chance that they are retained or not in the cross-quotations and contextual expositions.

The translations of the Plato’s "Timaeus" performed into Latin by Cicero and Chalcidius are two fundamental points in the history of Latin philosophical language and, therefore, in the evolution of the abstract expression in Latin. Some terms used in the "Timaeus", characterized by their strong mathematical value, allow us to study a part of the Latin vocabulary of abstraction and technicality, the vocabulary of geometry and arithmetic, in the context of a Plato’s philosophical and political reflection.

Existing Latin Catalan documents dated from the 9th to the 11th century allow for the description of a legal reality in which the testate succession is in force. Although men and women have the same rights and constraints as a legacy of the Visigothic succession right, in fact, women bear some more restrictions than men. As well, we could say that there is a kind of special treatment for women in the ownership and in the inheritance of certain types of goods. This is exemplified in the rules of dressing and the use of textiles in the home.

The "Corpus Documentale Latinum Cataloniae" (CODOLCAT) is part of the "Glossarium Mediae Latinitatis Cataloniae" (GMLC) project, a dictionary of the Latin and Romance terms documented in the lands corresponding to the linguistic domain of Catalan between the ninth and twelfth centuries.
The GMLC helps philologists, historians, legal scholars and all those with an interest in the Early Middle Ages to understand the notarial documents and the literary, legal and scientific texts produced in Latin at that time. These texts are the written testimony of mediaeval Latin, but also of the incipient Romance language. To create the dictionary we are using a card system with more than 50,000 entries plus a broad corpus of digitalized texts, currently containing more than 24,000 documents.
This corpus has grown into a lexical database known as CODOLCAT, which can be consulted by all those interested in the Early Middle Ages. CODOLCAT provides direct access to the texts written in Latin in Catalonia in the early medieval period. Its simple and advanced search options allow users to browse the documentary corpus with ease.
CODOLCAT is based at the GMLC headquarters at the Milá y Fontanals Institution, Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), in Barcelona.
