This article evaluates the impact of the universities in medium‒sized cities, taking the case of Zamora as a paradigm. Starting from the institution’s inception in this city, we analyze the process of the development of the Viriato campus, nestled in an old military structure that the new teaching destination has allowed to preserve. This undertaking has regenerated and transformed its urban environment and has had a revitalizing effect on the town in recent decades. Although the current situation has stalled the potential expansion foreseen, the local and university authorities continue to work together to reactivate this institution, which has made it possible to foresee the consolidation of this facility

So far this century, the adaptation to the European Higher Education Area has not only changed university teaching but has also involved a boost for research and knowledge transfer to society. This has been accompanied by the construction of specific spaces for its development. The century-old University of Salamanca, traditionally linked to the city, who has also preserved and increased the architectural heritage inherited from the past, has chosen to expand its area of influence with new campuses in peripheral locations. It has made a firm commitment to a new architecture, fully adapted to the new features, which has increased the different types of buildings that serve the University. Some examples on which we will focus on this occasion are the headquarters of the Research Institutes in the Biosciences field and the campus of Villamayor, where the Science Park was built.

The chapter and the city of Lima spared no expense in the canonization process of Archbishop Mogrovejo. Thanks to this effort, the deployment of artistic resources to promote him and his contribution to the evangelization of the New World was huge, reaching its zenith in the years immediately prior to his beatification in 1679. Artists and craftsmen of renown were employed for the festivities and the creation of images ranging from portraits to complete narrative series in print, not so much for devotional reasons but as part of an ineluctable diplomatic and propagandistic policy. Only in a second stage were some of these iconographic types used for cultural purposes, as is reflected in their reception in Spain and Latin America. With this article we attempt to bring together and specify this rich production, which had been forgotten in part.

The College of Oviedo took advantage of the sainthood of Toribio de Mogrovejo to promote its own prestige. It used the image of the Virgin’s handing over of the collegiate sash to St. Toribio, to spread out this uncertain event in order to show the status of being a collegial. A second iconographic type, singled out by his attire, was propagated by it, on many occasions associating his representation with other two saints also members of Colleges, being these representations almost interchangeable. Particularly the festivities organized by the College in 1727 to celebrate his canonization, were very remarkable, for those the architect Alberto de Churriguera designed an enormous ephemeral altar.

Knowledge about the original San Bartolomé College is of special interest in the sense that it could have provided a template for other secular colleges that also had influence in the Major Schools of Salamanca. Accordingly, this study essentially focuses on the gestation and characteristics of its architecture, although we also offer some data concerning other works that formet part of its rich artistic heritage, now dispersed, all from different documentary sources.

The work of the architect Andrés García de Quiñones in his first years as a professional has been the object of conjecture until now. The information we contribute here helps to clarify his professional development and delays the date of his intervention in the Jesuit College in Salamanca. In 1731, while still very young, he moved to Viseu to direct the construction of the convent of the Néris, with its famous suspended stairway, a powerful display of architectural mastery. Upon retuning home he made his way by working in different royal works begun in the Concepción Fort and in Ciudad Rodrigo, among them the arsenal and the gunpowder storehouse, which created many problems for him. Also attributed to these years are two designs of his of the New Cathedral in Salamanca, which have turned out to be an exceptional graphic document for knowledge of the early dome and the tabernacle-altarpiece

The aim of this article is to delve deeper into certain facets of the life of Andrés García de Quiñones. Leaving to one side his activity as an architect, here we focus on his family and analyze the arrangements made in his will, which confirm that he was quite a wealthy man by the end of his life, given the inventory and the distribution of his worldly goods. To seek the source of this wealth we analyze his talent for business after he went to Galicia and, in particular, the supply of timber for building the ships of the Royal Armada that he had in Asturias. Ultimately, his transformation into a landowner was a way to consolidate his social rise, and this is also reflected in both the house he lived in and his attire. Finally, we point out certain traits of his personality and the contents of his library

The creation of the Plaza de Anaya during General Thiébault's rule in
Salamanca was the only positive contribution from the French occupation of
this city. The conservation of the project planned makes it possible to
highlight the originality of its conception, as a closed square, not very
common in urban projects promoted by the government of José I. The
successive changes that this area underwent maintained the unitary nature of
the initial planning, which had the Palace of Anaya as a reference until the
alterations in 1972

The author analyzes the iconographie program of the chapel dedicated to saint Toribio of Mogrovejo, the
central motive of which was the representation of the sciences. Through this cycle the Colegio de Oviedo, in
clear rivalry with thé University, assumed the role corresponding to the latter institution, and offered an ideal
image of the college as generator of wisdom and the virtuous life. José de Churriguera's intervention in the
selection of the specific allegories helps to explain the presence of Architecture among the liberal disciplines

This study approaches the different problems that hindered the application of a coherent urban policy at the end of the 18th century, such as the persistence of jurisdictional diversity or the existence of differentiated groups within the building profession, both due to their training and to their connections with a given developer, which diminished their impartiality. There likewise existed the difficulty of combining the enlightened principles of regularity and symmetry with the practice of the projection of the lines of vision, which was commonplace in the Baroque era. Also revealed is the inefficacy of the criterion of alignment for changing the street layout without broadening the dimensions of its application, as well as the weakness of the prevailing urban norms in the face of private interests

This study deals with the consequences that the passage and massive billeting of soldiers during the War of Independence had on Salamanca´s heritage. First a description is made of the military infrastructure available in the city in the years inmediately prior to the conflict. The inadequacy of this infrastructure explains the extent of the functional modifications made in most of the monumental buildings -especially convents and colleges- which were converted into barracks, hospitals or prisons. Analysis is then made of the destruction caused by the decision to build a fortified space in the Monastery of San Vicente, which brought about the urban degradation and transformation of the entire southwestern area of the city, as well as the works carried out by the French during the occupation, with special attention to the Plaza of Anaya. The study concludes with an appraisal of these years, by means of the state the buildings were left in.

This article centres on the work of José de Churriguera inSalamanca which was almost completely unknown until a few years ago. Usingnew documental data we have been able to determine the moment of his return from Madrid in April, 1699, and to ascertain with more detail some of thework he was involved with in Salamanca. In this work there are traits which allow us to relate them to the pure tradition of Madrid in which he had been trained as an architect. Leaving to one side the works of San Esteban, which are well known, we have concentrated on the chapel of the Colegio de Oviedo, analyzing its building process begun in 1694 and its most salient characteristics. We have identified the chapel of "Nuestra Señora de las Angustias", attributed to José Churriguera, and made a detailed study of it. Likewise, we specify his participation in the Convent of San Agustín and the reasons for the lawsuit that went on until his death. Finally, we refer to other, less important, works in which he participated, such as the building of the side-chapel of the church of San Benito, the reredos of Carbajosa de la Armuña or diverse expert reports.

The aim of this article is to recover, for the architecture of Salamanca, the extinct "Colegio de Santa María Magdalena", the most importan college (Colegio Menor) of the city of Salamanca. The study of the original documentation allowed for the reconstruction of the caracteristics of the building, an old palace of the late 15th century, eáentially renovated in the 18th century. The intervention of AndrÚs García de Quiñones -unknown till now- has tobe streáed. He was the author of the design and the director of the court yard's reform. The work of his son Jerónimo (the reconstruction of the faþade and the new rector's house), who imposed a neoclaáic sobriety, is also analysed.

This article presents new findings on paintings and engravings that give representation to the remarkable diversity surrounding the artistic work achieved in Italy due to the canonization of Archbishop Mogrovejo in 1679. It also highlights the importance that the institutions concerned had in the conception of these iconographic creations, which became the focus of attention at the detriment of the religious element.
