His research focuses on theater music and opera, with special emphasis on eighteenth-century Spain, including Spanish zarzuela and reception of Italian opera. He has published a wide array of articles dealing with musical dramaturgy of opera. He has collaborated with texts for the Teatro de la Zarzuela and the Teatro Real in Madrid and has edited stage works of the Spanish composer José de Nebra. He is the author (with L. K. Stein) of the chapter dedicated to Spanish and Latin American opera in the Cambridge Companion to Eighteenth-Century Opera (CUP, 2009). He has recently edited the volume La música en el siglo XVIII within the work Historia de la música en España e Hispanoamérica (Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2014).edit
