There is to be found in Valéry's poetics a radicality akin to Marcel Duchamp's ready-mades: the work per se is depreciated for the benefit of the process that brings it forth. Valéry's poetics thus bears witness to the great aesthetic turmoils of the 20th century, which are themselves parallel to the evolution of the representations of work and value in economic thought, to which Valéry was attuned as a reader of Karl Marx and of the neo-classical economists.
