  • Objectives: To analyze the profile and the quality of antibiotics 'prescription in the district of AP Poniente-Roquetas for the years 1999 and 2000. Method: It is used a descriptive retrospective study. There bave been analyzed all the prescriptions of antibiotics from the groups: J01 (systemic antibiotics), J03 (chemotherapeutic systemics), G04A (antiseptics and urinary anti-infectious) and R05C1 (expectorants, including mucolytics with anti-infectious). It is used the DDD (Daily Defined Dose) as a unit of measure and the DHD (Daily Defined Dose per thousand inhabitants per day) as a quantitative indicator. As an indicative of the prescription quality, the antibiotics are classified into two levels according to their potential degree of use in primary care. Results: It has decreased the consumption of antibiotics from the year 1999 (26.227 DHD) to the year 2000 (24.762 DHD). In 1999 there was prescribed a 76.94% and a 23.06% of antibiotics of first and of second level respectively, while in the year 2000 the results were 75.49% and 24.51%. The most prescribed therapeutic subgroups are: penicillins, associated antibiotics, macrolides, cephalosporins, quinolones and urinary antiseptics. Conclusions: It is observed a decrease in the global consumption of antibiotics from the year 1999 to the 2000. As a favorable indicator, it has taken place an important decrease in the usage of antibiotics associated to expectorants. It is necessary to intervene in order to improve the usage of new antibiotics
