Patriarchal society has taken care, by means of some hegemonic discourses -and the grand tales (metanarratives) which have held them up, of creating biased gender identities, which have favoured the establishment of asymmetrical relationships, where some individuals have turned out to be subsidiary to the others. The ability that human being has to symbolize has let the shift of meanings in order to validate these discourses, being the mythological account a good instance of these.
