We are all artists now. Photography gets the credit. The reasoning does not go like this: we all take photographs, photography is an art, so we all make art. Obviously, the fact that photography is an art does not mean that every photograph is a work of art: we all take photographs and photography is an art but maybe the photographs that you and I take are not works of art. More subtle reasoning is needed to make a case for the conclusion that photography makes us all artists. The elements of the case are a theory of photography, some thoughts about when the use of photographic technology is artistic, and some observations about recent developments in that technology. Ultimately the agenda is to arrive at a better understanding of photographic art and some of the forms that it may take.
