Resumen de Funciones de la Educación Secundaria en la sociedad actual

La Educación Secundaria ocupa el núcleo del sistema educativo por su carácter de transición entre la unicidad de la Educación Primaria y un mundo de opciones diversas. A ésta se le asignan dos grandes funciones que, según como se planteen, pueden llegar a ser contradictorias. Por un lado, a la Educación Secundaria le corresponde trabajar la inmersión más profunda en los valores de la cultura, lo que podríamos llamar la función de formación académica o liberal. Por otro, se le asigna también la preparación para la vida del trabajo, lo que podríamos llamar la función de preparación profesional. El artículo analiza, desde distintos puntos de vista, las posibilidades de articulación de estas dos funciones. En primer lugar, se realiza un esbozo legislativo. A continuación se proponen dos diferentes modos de entender esa articulación, según dos perspectivas sobre las relaciones de la escuela y el mundo exterior, para situar más tarde la discusión en el marco de comprensión de la relación educativa como una relación de mediación. El artículo finaliza con algunas orientaciones para la acción.

Secondary Education is at the core of the education systems due to its transitional place between the uniqueness of primary education and a world of different options. It has to accomplish two major functions that may become contradictory. On the one hand, secondary education must carry out with the deeper initiation of students in the values of culture, what we might call the function of academic or liberal education. On the other, it must also prepare for working life, what we might call the function of professional training. The article examines, from different points of view, the possibilities for articulating these two functions. First, it brings an outline of the Spanish legislation on the matter. Then the author proposes two different ways of understanding that articulation according to two perspectives on the relation of the school and the outside world. Later the discussion is placed within the framework of understanding educational relationship as mediation. The article ends with some guidelines for action.
