    La familia Pickman, propietaria de la fábrica La Cartuja, fue la principal productora de loza cerámica en España durante la mayor parte del siglo XX. El presente artículo trata de su historia entre 1899 y el comienzo de la guerra civil española en 1936 y, fundamentalmente, del paulatino declive de su privilegiada posición en el mercado nacional. Partiendo de una situación casi monopolística hacia 1900, dicho declive fue el resultado de la incapacidad de los dueños, directivos de la empresa, para afrontar adecuadamente los retos originados por la creciente competencia de otras fábricas y por la política intervencionista de los gobiernos en materia industrial y de relaciones laborales. Dicha incapacidad no fue resultado de la ignorancia sino de decisiones amparadas en una cultura y una práctica empresarial �gentleman�, en la que la especulación y la búsqueda de rentas cobraban mayor interés que las inversiones productivas.

    The Pickman family, owner of the factory La Cartuja of Seville, was the main producer of chinaware in Spain during most of the 20th century. The present article tries the history of this firm between 1899 and the beginning of the spanish civil war in 1936 and, fundamentally, of the gradual slope of its privileged position in the domestic market. From a nearly monopolistic situation toward 1900, this slope was the result of the incapacity of the owners to adequately confront the challenges originated in a growing rivalry with other manufacturers and in a growing public intervention in industrial policy and labor relations. This incapacity was not the result of the ignorance but the result of decisions protected in a �gentleman� culture of business in which speculation and rent seeking had greater interest than the productive investments
