The author envisions the intellectual and spiritual situation of a Jewish city that dramatically doubted between giving herself to the brilliant mode of the times, the hellenistic lore and glamour, or keeping herself faithfull to her own religious traditions and her Jewish background, renouncing to any temptation of assimilation to the gentile world.
