Exod 32:19 needs to be read in the context of a holistic reading of Exod 32-34, connected to the larger context of the book of Exodus. The chapters form an inclusio type parenthesis together with Exod 24, connected by theological motifs, lexicon and location. Also, the verse needs to be connected to 32:20 and should be understood as a ritual to 'break the law' which results in the dissolution of the covenant. A study of the phrase wayyihar 'af provides further arguments for the ritual interpretation since it generally requires a rational, conscious and justified decision, elements that are usually associated with ritual action.
