Resumen de Aspectos biológicos y sociales en el funcionamiento intelectual de personas con síndrome de Down

  As alterações verificadas no Sistema Nervoso Central de pessoas com síndrome de Down têm sido apontadas como a causa do atraso intelectual que se observa nesta síndrome. No entanto, a lógica que subjaz os estudos que procuram estabelecer esta relação apresenta pelo menos três aspectos problemáticos: 1) o uso do QI como medida de capacidade intelectual; 2) a interpretação de relações de correlação como relações de causalidade, e 3) a reificação da noção de funcionamento cognitivo. Devido a isto, sugere-se a necessidade de redirecionar a investigação para a analise da configuração dos ambientes sociais das pessoas com atraso no desenvolvimento. Com base na teoria sócio-histórica de Vygotsky procura-se indicar algumas hipóteses sobre a conformação destes ambientes e sua relação com o desenvolvimento das funções psicológicas superiores

  The alterations in the central nervous system of people with Down syndrome have been pointed at as the cause of the intellectual delay observed in this syndrome. Nevertheless, the logic that underlies the studies trying to establish this relation presents at least three weak aspects: 1) the use of IQ as a measurement of intellectual capacity; 2) the interpretation of correlation as causal relations, and 3) the reification of the notion of cognitive functioning. Because of this, we suggested the necessity of redirecting research toward the analysis of the configuration of social environments of developmentally delayed people. Taking Vygotsky¿s socio-historical theory as a foundation we tried to formulate some hypotheses on the configuration of these environments and their relation with the development of the higher psychological functions.
